“Hinterland creates unique work for people to use, enjoy and cherish. We are artists, woodworkers and craftspeople who build by hand using natural materials. Drawing on fifteen years’ experience, we believe in and stand behind our techniques, designs and finished products.

To us, materials are at the heart of what we make. They provide the initial inspiration for the design, and also provide the user with an innate and ongoing connection to the natural world. We care about where we source, prizing salvaged, found and local materials, along with recycled and eco products. And we care about how we treat those materials through the building process.

Everything we build has a story. It starts with the materials, is shaped by the design and build, then develops through the many hands that use it throughout its lifetime.” — Hinterland Design

SCATTER/GATHER PENDANT LIGHT

image

“This pendant gets its name from its materials: wooden branches scattered far and wide along the rugged Pacific shoreline, that are gathered up. Hand-constructed using pegged and glued through-tenons, no fasteners detract from the abstract and natural beauty of each unique fixture.”

MATERIALS | Found ocean-washed branches, black or white cloth-covered twisted electrical wire, medium-base porcelain lamp socket

LITTLE GEM

image

“A side table and sculpture for indoors or out, it’s made from cast-off cedar logs given second life as a crystalline form. It’s hand-shaped and faceted based on the different characteristics of each log, and variations in wood grain, top surface and finish further ensure that no two are alike. Left to weather outdoors, this piece will acquire a natural silver finish.”

NURSELOG

“These dual-purpose side tables bring the outdoors to the indoors. Mimicking rain forest stumps that grow mosses and ferns from their tops, a round insert allows a small arrangement of plants to add a living element to a useful surface. No two are alike.”

TREETOP DINING TABLE

image

“Inspired by the sentinels of the forest, these salvaged and dried hardwood logs from coastal B.C. create unique, tree-like table legs that only reveal their modernist leanings at the chamfered intersection with the table’s top surface. This knockdown table flatpacks, and is easily assembled.”

MATERIALS | Salvaged hardwood legs FSC-certified hardwood top

Propellor

Who we are …
Toby Barratt - Designer, Principal
Pamela Goddard - Designer, Principal
Nik Rust - Designer, Principal
Sebastian Curadeau - Creative Director

What we do …
“Propellor is an independent, Vancouver based multi-disciplinary design studio. We thrive on the challenge of creating useful, beautiful and ecologically minded objects and experiences. Our work spans a broad range of disciplines from lighting and furniture design to spatial design and sculpture. There are threads that run through all of our work - an interest in nature, it’s forms and systems, a passion for exploring materials, function and aesthetics and a desire to make things that will last well into the future.”

Range

seen here: 60” x 9” x 9”
materials: black walnut, basalt, gypsum, LED’s

We love spending time in the mountains. Range is a light sculpture inspired by the view of the Vancouver’s North Shore mountains from our studio window. Made from basalt stone, gypsum and black walnut, Range is an expression of the epic beauty of the high mountains.

Galiano

seen here: 6.5” x 3.75” x 12”

Comprised of two iconic West Coast woods, the Galiano light takes its’s name from our favorite island off the coast of Vancouver. The Galiano’s shade is made from Douglas Fir finished with natural oil and beeswax while the hanging Arbutus branch serves as the pull switch.

Umlaut

The Umlaut table light was our first excursion into using oak salvaged from disused shipping pallets. When milled, sanded, oiled and burnished the oak comes alive. The Umlaut was made entirely from the wood of one pallet and finished with pure walnut oil. Umlaut was shown in 2009 in the Free Spirit exhibition at the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, BC.

Kilter

seen here: 38” x 6” x 13”

Kilter emerges from the process of taking something old and making it new, transforming something forgotten into something of use. With Kilter, a little elbow grease, beautiful joinery and considered proportions reshape oak hardwood from disused shipping pallets into a light that is minimal in form but bursting with character.

Mycologic

seen here: 72” diameter

Oyster, shitake, morel - our love of mushrooms compelled us to investigate how they grow. The Mycologic light takes it’s abstracted form from the branching characteristics of the mushroom’s root systems. Crafted from solid walnut and lit with energy efficient led’s, the Mycologic light is a unique expression of organic growth.

Calvino

The Calvino series of pendant lights pay homage to novelist Italo Calvino. As in his great utopic book Invisible Cities, our Calvino light suggests an idealized floating city, warmly lit at night. Available in caramelized and chestnut bamboo, ideal for hanging individually or in groups.

Calvino Kubrick

Kubrick is the dark horse of our Calvino family of lights. Created for Radiant Dark 2008, an exhibition of new work by Canadian designers curated by the talented people at MADE, Kubrick is dark like obsidian on the outside and warm bamboo on the inside. Kubrick is made from Paperstone, an FSC certified, 100% post-consumer recycled paper. Bound with cashew nut oils and water-based resins, it has the look, weight and tactile quality of stone.

Dram

seen here: 36” diameter in red, amber & grey

Dram is a light sculpture composed of 120 vintage tumblers and drinking glasses from the 1960’s and 70’s. Each glass, imbued with a history of domestic use, contributes it’s unique qualities to the whole. Dram pays homage to the barely noticed beauty of everyday objects.

Sombrio

seen here: 36” & 24” diameter at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre

Sombrio beach on Vancouver Island is pure West-Coast - big trees and clear cold water teeming with life. Our Sombrio light takes it’s inspiration from the strands of sea weed that float gracefully below the surface of Sombrio Bay’s dark green waters. Sombrio shape, size, colour and material are fully customizable.
